The building welcomed its one millionth visitor already in March 2019 with daily visits on the busiest days topping at 20,000. People come there to spend time, not just to borrow and return books.

The building welcomed its one millionth visitor already in March 2019 with daily visits on the busiest days topping at 20,000. Oodi, the new Helsinki Central Library, was designed by Helsinki architectural firm ALA, which won the open architecture competition organised by the City of Helsinki in 2013. The main building contractor was YIT Rakennus Oy. In the architects’ mind, as a new building, Oodi must be more than the sum of its individual square metres. The Oodi library building is an architectural landmark occupying a central site in the Helsinki city centre. The three-storey building making extensive use of wood and glass is the result of an open international architectural competition, which received 544 entries from all around the world. Reports of the library’s death are greatly exaggerated – and Helsinki’s stunning Central Library Oodi by ALA Architects is proof.

The new central library in the Finnish capital’s centre consists almost entirely of public spaces and offers a wide selection of services. There are three public entrances in the building – one in the south for the main pedestrian flow from the Central Railway Station, 2020-08-14 On 26 March 2019, Helsinki’s new central library Oodi welcomed its millionth visitor, less than four months after opening its doors. By that time, Oodi had issued 9000 library cards, and approximately 60% of Oodi’s books were on loan, including most children’s books.
