Described by Liszt as “the most poetic of composers”, Schubert (31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) became the quintessential composer of the early Romantic period. He composed prolifically, Franz Schubert died on 19 November 1828, so the 190th anniversary of his passing is upon us. The manner and cause of Schubert's death, is, calmly considered, one of the least important aspects of his biography. Schubert was born in the Himmelpfortgrund, a small suburb of Vienna. His father Franz Theodor Florian, the son of a Moravian peasant, was a parish schoolmaster; his mother Elizabeth Vietz, was the daughter of a Silesian master locksmith and had also been a housemaid for a Viennese family prior to her marriage.

Four years later, he became an independent composer and was destined to live in poverty from then onwards. Having an introverted personality, Schubert played his songs mostly amongst a couple of friends Franz Peter Schubert was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short lifetime, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works (mainly lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of piano and chamber music.

Once a stern critic of German music, Franz Schubert became passionate devotee of Beethoven later in life, so much so that he asked on his deathbed to be buried with his idol. Although as a teenager Franz Schubert wrote that Austrian music should rid itself of Germanic influence - a clear reference to Beethoven - he was later to change his mind totally.
